Hats off to Viola Davis for speaking out about something that has plagued women of color: backhanded compliments. “You’re less classically beautiful” or “You’re so pretty. You don’t even look [fill in your race].” So only if you can “pass” you’re beautiful. It goes even further in that we are also divided within our own race – lighter-skinned is preferable to darker skin, looser curls are preferable to kinky hair. All these stigmas that are perpetuated in entertainment… but then there was Viola Davis.
